The largest temple among the temples of Khajuraho, Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, Khajuraho is originally a Shivalaya. The construction period of the temple is 999 AD and its length is 102′, width 6′ and height is 101′. According to local opinion, it is named Kandariya, according to Kandarpi, a name of Lord Shiva. It was from this Kandarpi that the word Kandarpi evolved, which later changed to Kandariya.

The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is one of the most preserved temples of medieval times. This temple is the largest temple in the Western group of temples in the Khajuraho complex. Kandariya Mahadeva Temple built by King Vidyadhar of the Chandel dynasty in 1025-1050 AD. This temple is the largest, tallest and artistic temple in Khajuraho which is also known as ‘Chaturbhuj Temple’. All the extinct temples including Kandariya Mahadeva Temple were included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the year 1986 due to their artistry.

According to the Muslim historian Ibn-Al-Athir, Vidyadhar was a very powerful and powerful ruler who built the construction of the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple. This ruler fought with Muhammad Mahmud Ghaznavi of Ghazni in the 1019 invasion. But no decision was made for this fight, after which Muhammad had to return. Muhammad again fought against Vidyadhara in 1022 and attacked the fort of Kalinjar. But he failed to siege the fort. After this, Vidyadhar built the construction of Kandariya Mahadeva Temple in the happiness of victory over Muhammad. Which was dedicated to Lord Shiva.

This huge Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is a perfect specimen of Khajuraho architecture. It is made in its outer shape by adding 84 equal parts of the shape and the horns, with unique high peaks. The temple is visible due to its ornamentation and special rhythm.

The temple is considered to be superior in Central Indian architecture due to its magnificent shape and proportional curiosity, exquisite craftsmanship, and architectural design. The main pavilion, along with the pavilion and maha mandapa, its base-plan, form, height, lift, ornamentation and shape represent a fine example of the governing system. Its peculiarity is also that the uplifted horn going towards its height seems to be very effective.

This is the only temple of Khajuraho with projection on both sides and back of the Jagati. Its wake is about three meters high. Its roof is of granite stone and sandstone rocks are made on it. The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple murals are adorned with leaves of lotus flower and the plaques emanating from the Jalaya, Kumbha and the outside are adorned with tamal papers. The temple is set on a high prominence, which has many decorated idols.

The idols include two rows, statues of elephants, horses, warriors, hunters, madaris, musicians, dancers and devotees. The three strips of the temple have idols of deities, sur beauties, mithuns, Vyas and serpents. There are two Makara-Toranas inside the temple. The statues of Apsaras have been inscribed with beauty. All the idols here are tall and appear to be balanced in shape. Here the beauty of female erosion is clearly visible.

The composition and ornamentation of each of the limbs and vertigo is unique. Its jagged plan with the most rhythmic trajectories and chariots in the vertical is notable.

Entry Gate of Kandariya Mahadeva Temple

The entrance to the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is made of Panchayatan style. On this, the ornate and magnificent jyotran ornamented with virile and cosmic deities and musicians are worth seeing. The crescent and pavilion are intricately carved. There is a large platform on the outer wall in the parikrama area.

The platform outside the parikrama and outside the temple is raised in strong and deep shape. Each part of the temple is connected to each other and extends towards the east-west direction. The pavilion has been made a maha mandapa by making ventilation in the form of a balcony. There is air ventilation inside and the pavilions are open from three sides.

The walls of the temple are solid and there is a balcony decorated, which is a means of lighting. The idols start from the balcony itself. There are lights and shadows on the balcony and ventilated statues. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is at the highest position. To reach there, one has to climb above the staircase. Seven parts are also given to the square below the summit along with the Saptrath Garbhagriha.

The mandap on the thigh of the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple and the ornamental part of the exterior of the Mukhamandapa are the Rajasena, Vedika kalak, the adjoining plate, the ornamental. The roof of the temple starts from the Kapot part and the roof is lifted from the Vrndika. Each mandap of the temple has a different roof. The ceiling with the highest height is the sanctum sanctorum and its end is at the highest peak. This peak is decorated with four Uru-peaks and innumerable small horns have also been made.

Among these are earrings and deities of nature. The chariots, Nandika, Pratihara and Karna of Chaturanga are inscribed on the main base of Moolamanjari. The roof of the Mahamandapa of the temple is Domakara, which is made of small tilakas (pyramidal roofs). This makes the Ang style clear. The first roof is made of four tilakas. Also, four other rows of tilakas also appear in a pyramidal shape. On the roof of the north-south, five singhkaranas rise from the Kut-hour and decorate the roof. This terrace is equipped with a pedestal and neck and is decorated with Chandrika, Kalash, and Bijpunk.

Main Mandap

The main mandap of Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is built on four Bhadrak-pillars. Its upper half is above the adjacent side and the lower half is below the adjacent side. This part is decorated with lotuses. To come from the pavilion to the pavilion is Makartoran. The main Makartoran is fully sculpted.

There are four steps of Chandrashila at the door of the sanctum sanctorum. There are nine branches at the door.

Its details are as follows: –

  • There are simple inscriptions on the first branch.
  • There are nymphs on the second.
  • The third is Vyala.
  • Gemini is on the fourth.
  • Vyal is sedentary on the fifth.
  • Beautiful apsaras are inscribed on the sixth.
  • The seventh is simply engraved.
  • Lotus letters are marked on the eighth.
  • On the ninth branch is the wavy ridges and the serpent Rupankint.

All chariots are equipped with origins. Lotus letters are written on the right branch and Yamuna on the left side. A chariot of the Dvara Shila displays Saraswati with Abhay. Saraswati Chakradar Kamal Dand and Kamandal are also here. The Rathika below the pillar branch is shown sitting Shiva-Parvati and the chariot under the Naga Rathika, four persons are enshrined. In the inner canopy there are lotus flowers and in the corners are carved face sculptures. A pedestal of sandy stone is shown supporting the stone lingam.

The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is chaturanga and rests on a high place. On the north side, elephant, horse, man, and miscellaneous scenes are inscribed with Gemini. Here there is a thigh on the altar, which has idols in two rows. Here the deity, apsara, vyala, and Mithun- pair marking is done with beauty.

Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is built in Sandhar Prasad. It has a sharp front and a corner. The height of its back is quite high. The temple faces east. The stairs are wide and extend to the mouthpiece. Mukhchutushki Bandanamalika is beautiful.
